Filmmaker/Entrepreneur -
Seeking Free "Dumb" through creative filmmaking and action!
I started Checkmate Films in January 2007. However the story of our company has deeper roots. During the turn of the millennium I was heavily involved in producing and managing local Hip-Hop artist in Colorado. Little did I know that while shooting artist concerts, studio sessions, shorts, and the daily hustle to gain exposure for their music; a deep love for the art of story-telling though the digital video realm was taking shape.
In the year of 2004 I relocated to Southern California to expose myself to new opportunities and challenges. I began studying television production and AVID non-linear editing at Goldenwest College in Huntington Beach. While in school I started networking myself into this highly competitive, yet rewarding industry. Shortly after school I began an internship at Torrance Community Television (TCTV) in Torrance, California where I continued to work hard and hone my skills. Once I completed my internship I earned a position at Warning TV; a start-up viral television station where I worked as a studio manager, associate producer, and editor. After about a year I put a solid plan together and started Checkmate Films. Our goal is to make videos and films an accessible medium for those who might not otherwise have the opportunity. The name "Checkmate Films" derived from the notion that the motion visual arts can entice you, the viewer into a trance like state. Resembling the game of chess "Checkmate" is the end, the capture... our goal is to capture your whole being while experiencing our films!
